Bangladesh Round Table on Social Compliance
The Bangladesh Round Table on Social Compliance is formed by stakeholders and buyers in 2009 as a country based dialogue forum. Participants are seeking a constructive dialogue for effective communication and collaboration among the stakeholders in the RMG industry of Bangladesh. During the past eleven sessions (2009 - 2013) the Round Table practiced dialogue on wide issues related to compliance, objectives of a healthy environment for the industry and Fire Safety. Understanding elementary issues, relevant for the RMG, is meant to move forward contributing in a discussion among representatives from business associations (BGMEA, BKMEA), suppliers, trade unions, European and American buyers, academia, labour activists, NGO’s, Government, Diplomatic Missions as well as Members of Parliament.
- Have Round Tables in Bangladesh been fruitful? What have been the main outcomes?
The series of Round Table in Bangladesh is a successful established platform of a social dialogue, which is rare among the institutional and political set up in this country. As benefits, we see the interest to exchange the stakeholders’ views and information as the composition of Round Table participants is uncommon in as those participants do not necessarily meet in this composition and responding to questions.
The Round Table raises topics and enable a debate and sensitise on important issues. Worker – management relation and the challenges for genuine workers representation has often been on the agenda as well as the necessity to develop a public social safety net.
